It should be suitable for use in an ethics and computing, social impact of computing, or software engineering course. This material is made available for academic, non-profit use, with appropriate attribution. It may NOT be incorporated into any other product, sold, or modified and redistributed. Copying to distribute to another faculty member for use in their classroom teaching is encouraged. The material is organized as two powerpoint files, several video clips that can be played from within the powerpoint, and several background documents. EastportStudyGroup.doc ota_bmd_tech_1985.pdf These are government documents created during the Reagan-era "star wars" program. (And so the copyright is not held by any individual.) They are included here as general background for the ballistic missile defense problem. Thanks to Chuck Seitz for the suggestion that these documents be included. The Eastport Study Group report has been scanned from a printed original and proofread, but there may still be a few minor typos. StarWarsOverview.doc* This is an updated version of a paper presented by Kevin Bowyer at the 2001 International Symposion on Technology and Society. It discusses the purpose and structure of this curriculum module, and offers some suggestions for how to use it in the classroom. This paper would be an appropriate citation for this material.
