Academic Interests/research

Professor Bowyer's research interests are in the general areas of computer vision and pattern recognition. One current project, pursued in collaboration with Professor Patrick Flynn, involves biometrics research and support of the government-sponsored Face Recognition Grand Challenge and the Iris Challenge Evaluation. Particular topics pursued in this project include 3D face recognition, multi-modal face recognition, iris recognition, and development of biometrics based on the ear shape and appearance. Current external funding of this project is over one million dollars. Another current project, pursued in collaboration with Professor Lawrence Hall at the University of South Florida, is in the area of data mining. Of particular interest in this project is the development of classifier ensemble methods that work well in "extreme" cases, such as high degree of skew between classes, high dimension of feature vector, or large size of training data. This project is supported by Sandia National Laboratories, with cumulative total funding of over one million dollars.
