Both the University and the Department have polices on academic integrity. These are the guidelines to which all conduct is to conform. I would like to emphasis two points. First, I encourage student to freely discuss the homework with one another as you formulate individual solutions. The work a student turns in should represent the student author's understanding of the problem. In general, copying (in whole or in part) another student's homework, exam, computer program, paper, etc., is not permitted. It is also unacceptable to copy work from a student who has taken the course previously. Second, it is necessary to properly reference the work of others whenever it is used. Uncited work implicitly is assumed to be the author's own. Therefore, using another's work without proper citation is in effect claiming it as your own. Using the work of another is acceptable, provided it is properly credited. Of course, you will receive credit only for the work that is yours.
(Substantial portions of the above have been borrowed from Professor Powers.)
